“We can’t give youth the stage and think our work is done because we’ve involved them in the life of the church. It’s our responsibility as adults to not just give them the ‘keys’ but also teach them to ‘drive’.”
— Kalie Kelch, Co-director of Magnify Worship
Magnify Worship: Music Education and Leadership Development is a multi-year curriculum designed to help Adventist schools and churches establish a worship program that disciples young people and trains them to use their musical talents for God’s glory. The curriculum contains seven units of study, weekly lesson outlines, and teaching resources, in addition to valuable information about how to start a class—from auditions to setting up bands to rehearsal procedures. The content of the curriculum provides educators with the framework to establish a program and have resources and materials for at least a two-year cycle
Biblical Foundation
The framework of this curriculum is based on a solid biblical foundation. Without understanding who we worship, why we worship, the responsibility of a worship leader, and the role of music within worship, assembling a group of young people to play music together is nothing short of forming a band with the sole purpose of “jamming.” This program seeks to take students deeper in their spiritual journey so they may lead from the overflow of their experience with God.
Music Education
The curriculum covers music theory and principles for arranging music. In addition to diving into the technical side of scales, both in alphabetical and numeric form, students are encouraged to develop their ear and listen to how songs are constructed. By playing to the strengths of their band and applying dynamics to their songs, they will learn to create arrangements that enhance the worship experience.
Leadership Training
An important component of this curriculum is developing student leaders who are responsible for the classmates who are a part of their worship team. These leaders learn practical organizational and leadership skills, like how to prepare for and budget your rehearsal and how to deal with conflict on your team. Mentoring is at the heart of the leadership training, giving students godly guidance as they grow.
